Points of Pride

  • April Rains and Nancy Threatt, Exceptional Children's Teachers at Indian Trail Elementary, organized an informative EC Parent Night on various topics, including Autism. A guest speaker from the Autism Society of North Carolina came to share information and various strategies for parents.

  • Catherine Perry, Assistant Principal at New Town Elementary, and Melissa Whitley, Exceptional Children's Teacher at New Town Elementary, provided an informative training on Dyslexia for all staff members.   

  • The Occupational Course of Study (OCS) students at Forest Hills High School used their creative talents to transform empty boxes as part of an effort to promote cancer awareness. The OCS students took on the challenge of developing a school based enterprise by decorating the boxes and filling them with cookies, candies and cupcakes. The finished products were available for sale to their peers and teachers at school. Wow, that is certainly thinking outside of the box!

At Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts, during the persuasive writing unit and in conjunction with Presidents' day, Mrs. Marci Micciantuono’s 4th grade writers wrote letters to the President persuading him to send them various items, including information on the family dog, the White House, and a picture of himself.

East Elementary School Observes Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month, a time to help others understand the behavior and feelings of people with autism. Christina Mitchell, a teacher in the Department for Exceptional Children at East Elementary School, leads a class of five students with autism. Autism Awareness Month is an especially important time for Mitchell and her students.
